HYDERABAD, July 17: Members of the intelligentsia, at a meeting at the Centre of Excellence Arts and Design in Jamshoro on Sunday, set up the Sindh Sufi Movement to promote he message of Sufism.
Professor Dr Mohammad Ibrahim Panhwar will be the convenor of the movement and a 15-member committee — including Professor Qalandar Shah Lakiyari, Syed Munir Shah, Dr Tehmina Mufti, Zawar Naqvi and Ghulam Rasool Chandio – will organise its programmes.
Professor Panhwar and Mr Chandio said the head office of the movement would be in Sakrand and one acre of land had been acquired for the purpose.
They said initially the office would have 5,000 books and computers with internet facility. A mosque, a temple, a church and places of worship of other religions would be built near the office. Smoking would be forbidden in the complex, they added.
They said the forum would hold conferences and concerts in different areas of Sindh and publish a magazine in Sindhi, Urdu and English to promote Sufism.
They said the movement would use the strength of Sufism to end tribal feuds and outdated customs like karo-kari. The forum would be open to everyone without any consideration for colour, caste and creed.
They said they were not against any religion but wanted to promote Sufism, particularly among students. “Sufism gives the message of love, peace, humanity and universal brotherhood,” they said, adding that it taught people not to deprive anyone of his rights and, at the same time, not to let anyone snatch his rights.
They said that they would spread the message of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai and Shah Inayat Shaheed across the world through Internet.(DAILY DAWN DATED: 18=7=2011)
